Traffic & the Human Race

This morning was a cluster when it came to driving in Phoenix. The westbound I-10 had a motor home overturned, the eastbound I-10 had drivers gawking at the motor home, the I-60 had 2 lanes blocked and every other highway was backed up as a result of those delays.

And as I sat in this mess, I thought about how traffic so mirrors the human race.

An accident that causes other cars to screech to a halt is a reminder that all our fates are in some way connected. We depend on others – elected officials, financial leaders, activists – to keep the world running smoothly for all of us so we can go about our day. It’s only when something goes wrong that we become aware of how fragile that system truly is.

It is also a reminder of how much power one individual can have. One slow driver that is completely unaware of his/her surroundings can back up traffic for miles – just as one powerful but ignorant individual can back pedal human progress.

There are those outliers that take crazy routes that may either be “illegal” or too difficult for our own equipment to handle. Think the drivers that get frustrated and drive on the sides of the highway, or cut through a ditch to get to an off ramp. We secretly wish that we had the balls to be like them or the physical/mental capacity to follow their example.

Think about that the next time you are in traffic.

  1. Rules are fantastic for keeping people in line, but not for advancing them or fixing problems.

Know what I think about? How irrational traffic is. It makes no sense. Sure when weather’s bad or accidents happen there are reasons for slow traffic. But some days it just sucks for no logical. You can leave at the same time, go the same route and still, suck.
