As many of you are aware, I am on a life long journey towards self-perfection. Yes, I know it is in vain and will only cause struggle and strife…but why settle for less, right?
Well, I’m about as near to self-perfection as I could hope to be I believe. I’m leaving out two parts to perfection which are important, but not controllable by me and therefore not relevant to this blog entry.
For years I’ve written about my lack of discipline. Sure I do well in school, maintain an socially acceptable body weight and can perform menially tasks quickly enough that my bosses keep me on. But really, none of that required much effort (I’m not trying to brag here, promise). I didn’t feel healthy or strong. I didn’t feel intelligent. I didn’t feel challenged or that I was meeting my potential.
So for the fourth year in a row, I made New Years Goals. I think I stated them in an early blog entry this year. Usually they either never got started, or lasted a week.
I have no idea why this year is different, but I’m glad it is.
Goal #1 – Eat Healthier. I don’t care much about my weight, except when it means buying new pants. As my pants were getting a tad too tight, I decided I wanted to shed a few pounds so as to no go shopping, but also feel healthier. I have kept up an 1,800 calories per day diet, as well as eat one serving of vegetables a day. I’ve lost 5 pounds in a month and feel incredible inside.
Goal #2 – Exercise regularly. This presented a problem since I’m much to busy to hit a gym and have a dog who could use the exercise as well. Solution = purchase a bike. I ride my bike to work each day, which equates to 30 miles a week, 1,524 calories. On the days when I have class and not work, I either rollerblade with Layla for 30 minutes in the morning or do yoga. I can touch my toes now!
Goal #3 – Don’t procrastinate. This was the one I was really skeptical about. But really, it’s the small things that make the battle seem worth winning. For example, I hated how my car was always a mess inside and then it would take my hours to clean. So I made the simple rule that nothing gets left in my car. Now, my car is always clean. Second, I make a small To Do list everyday, as opposed to a huge weekly list. I put it by my bedroom light so that I see it in the morning and when I come home. It can’t include more than 5 things. I always get my To Do lists done now.
Goal #4 – Succeed in school. This one is harder to tell since I just started. The major difference is I do everything ahead of time. I make sure all my readings are done, and I’ve laid out calendars on when to start assignments and when they’re due. I also scheduled time during the week to do homework, so that my weekends are completely free.
So there you have it. It’s been a month and still going strong. Now if I could just figure out my social life, I’d be round about nearly perfect!
Kudos to you on your goal setting and progress tracking!
Hey, there’s a job at ASU that I’m going to apply for.
